The insects themselves
- Carpenter ants: pinched waist, elbowed antennae, unequal wing lengths if winged, usually large and black or black-and-red.
- Termites: straight-sided body, straight beaded antennae, equal-length wings, typically pale cream (workers) or dark (swarmers).
The damage
Carpenter ants excavate wood to nest in it. Their galleries are smooth, clean and often follow softened, water-damaged wood. They push debris out, so you find coarse sawdust-like frass mixed with insect parts below the nest.
Termites eat wood. Their galleries follow the soft spring grain and are packed with soil and mud. You will not find clean sawdust — instead look for mud tubes on foundations and a layered, dirty interior when damaged wood is opened.
Which is more common in the Hudson Valley?
Carpenter ants are the far more frequent complaint in this region, and they are strongly associated with moisture problems. Subterranean termites are less common here than farther south but do occur in New York, which is why correct identification matters before anyone starts treating.
Not sure which one you have?
A clear photo of the insect, the damage, or the debris is usually enough to narrow it down. If wood is already damaged, an on-site inspection is the reliable next step.
